Guan Daosheng

  • Guan Daosheng was a female scholar-painter during the Yuan Dynasty, with the courtesy names Zhongji and Yaoji. She was the wife of the famous painter and calligrapher Zhao Mengfu. In the fourth year of the Yuan Emperor Renzong's reign (1317), she was granted the title of Wei Guo Furen (Lady of the State of Wei) and became known as "Madam Guan" in history. She was skilled in painting the Four Gentlemen (the Four Plants: bamboo, plum, orchid, and chrysanthemum), particularly ink bamboo, plum blossoms, and orchids. Additionally, she excelled in landscape painting, Buddhist imagery, poetry, and calligraphy.
