Ashikaga Yoshimitsu

Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was the third shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate. In the fifth year of the Meitoku era (1394), he became a monk, adopting the religious name Rokuon'in Tenshō Dōgi. In the eighth year of the Ōei era (1401), he sent envoys, Zuō and Hibiki, to Ming China. In the diplomatic letter, he acknowledged Ming's sovereignty, pledged fealty, and agreed to tribute, thereby establishing trade relations with the Ming Dynasty.
