GUSTAVE COURBET

• Gustave Courbet, born in France, founder of realism in opposition to neoclassicism and romanticism. He studied drawing at a Catholic secondary school and at the age of 18 studied under the painter Frangiulo.Until then, it was common for large scale paintings in Western painting to deal with historical or religious subjects, but he shocked the art world at that time by depicting the funeral of an unnamed commoner with dignity.
