Xie Zhiliu

• Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997), courtesy name Zhiliu, and pseudonym Zhuangmuweng, was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. He was an expert in calligraphy and the appraisal of ancient books and paintings. Along with Zhang Heng (Zhang Congyu), he was famously known as "Zhang of the North, Xie of the South." Xie held many prestigious positions, including vice chairman of the Shanghai Cultural Heritage Protection Committee, advisor to the Shanghai Museum, director of the China Artists Association (CAA) and vice chairman of its Shanghai branch, as well as director of the China Calligraphers Association and vice chairman of its Shanghai branch. He also served as a member of the National Cultural Relics Appraisal Committee.
