Yu Xianpei, with the courtesy name as Xiangfu, was born in Wei County, Shandong. During the Xianfeng era, he was invited by the shogunate to visit Xinghua with his father Dexing, where he studied the Six Laws for eight years under the guidance of masters such as Jiang Shichou and Wang Meilin. Afterwards, he was awarded the title of Eight Painters by Empress Dowager Cixi.
