Ma Yizhi

• Ma Yizhi was born in Haining Yuanhua, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province. When he was young he studied painting with Zhang Boying in Tongxiang, Jiaxing. He learned ancient texts and poetry from the scholar Tei Souyi, who was from the same town. In the 1930s, he lived in Shanghai and interacted with painters such as Zheng Wuchang, Huang Binhong, and Zhu Yuzhan. During the war, when all industries were in recession, he returned to Huanshi, Haining, and devoted himself to painting and calligraphy. His work is tasteful and expresses the atmosphere of China.
