Wei Letang

  • Wei Letang, born in Mazhu, Yuyao, Zhejiang, is a calligrapher, seal engraver, and a famous painter. He moved to the United States in 1956 and became one of the first generation Chinese-American abstract painters. He delved deeply into the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, and in the 1960s he held exhibitions with the pioneer of expressionism, Jackson Pollock, and pop art, Andy Warhol. He combines Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting with Western painting to create a unique abstract art. After thinking about the composition of the painting rationally, his novel style of drawing boldly with freehand shocked people.
