Deng Sanmu

  • Deng Sanmu was born in Shanghai. His calligraphy was excellent in all four scripts: regular script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script. His style of calligraphy was magnificent, and also he was good at seal carving.

      Zhang Tingji, courtesy name is Shunan, art name is Shuwei, an epigrapher and calligrapher in Qing Dynasty. Passed the examination of the Imperial Examination with the first grade in 1798. Good at poetry and versed in epigraphy and cultural appreciation. He likes to collect ancient artifacts, and his collection includes musical instruments, tableware, stone monuments, books, and paintings.

      Yuan Tian Geng, the art name as Yumebai, was born in Kuaiji. He serves as a director of Nansha. He lives in Shanghai and makes a living by selling paintings. He specializes in floral paintings. His handwriting resembles that of Zhang Xiong.

    • Wang Yachen

      Wang Yachen (1894-1983) was born in Hangzhou Zhejiang, originally from Taiping (now Huangshan). In 1915, he and Chen and others established China’s first painting association called “the Oriental Painting Association”. He came to Japan in 1916, graduated from the Western Painting Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1921, and returned to China in the same year, and served as the professor and the chief of Shanghai Art College. From 1928 to 1931, he went to Europe for research, and after returning to China, he was the principal of the Qing Arts College and the principal of the Xinhua Arts Normal School. In 1947, he traveled to the United States, held lectures and painting exhibitions, and worked to spread Chinese painting.

      Deng Erya was born in Dongguan, Guangdong. He is a fourth son of Deng Lianshang. He learned seal-engraving when he was 8-year-old and he also learned seal carving when he was in elementary school. After he was back in Guangdong, he saw Hung Muhu’s seal carving and started learning making stamps. Around his 40s, he went to Japan to learn literature and after he went back to Guagdong, he learned gold stone and calligraphy. He has rich collection. The most valuable one is “Kuangzhanruo Instrument” in the last year of Ming dynasty.

    • Zhao Shuru

      Zhao Shuru(1874-1945) was born in Yinxian (now Ningbo) Zhejiang. Original name was Run Xiang, courtesy name was Xian Chen and Shuru, later he changed his name to Shi Zhe, art name was Ren Chang, in his later years he named himself Ernu Laoren also known as Shu Ru. Late Qing Dynasty, he appointed in a government post named ‘Tong Zhi’ in Fujian Province. After the Republic of China was established, he lived in seclusion in Shanghai. He is good at epigraph, painting and calligraphy, flowers, plants, insects and animals, especially painting horses ,and can be called “the Zhao Mengfu of modern times”.
