Kusakabe Meikaku, his real name is Tosaku, the courtesy name is Ziyu, and the art names are Dongyu, Suiryu, Yazuru, Old Crane, and Tsuruso. He is called "the father of modern Japanese calligraphy". In 1891, he traveled to China and interacted with literary figures of the late Qing dynasty, such as Zhang Zuyi, Wu Dacheng, and Wu Changshuo. He was an early member of the Xilin company.
