Xue Zhai

• Xue Zhai (1754-1819), Masakata Masuyama, lord of the Ise-Nagashima Domain, name is Sen, Kimisen, Sessai, Shoin Koin, and Michihito Ishizumi. A famous flower and bird painter of the Edo period in Japan. He was born in Edo in 1754. In 1774 he met Shogun Tokugawa Ieharu and assumed the position of Kawachi no kami. In 1785 he founded Bunreikan, Confucius Temple. He studied under Shen Chung and is good at sketching, landscape painting, and bird-and-flower painting. He brought a new style of bird-and-flower painting to the Edo period.
