Zhu Li was born in Jinxu County, Jiangsu Province (now Wuxi) with the courtesy name as Yi Fu and the artname as Yi Yang. He came from a poor family and learned the tea trade when he was young. But he didn't want to be a merchant, so he started studying Kanji. He imitated the calligraphic styles of Yan Zhenqing and Ouyang Zhuan to enhance his penmanship.
