Kishida Liusheng

  • Ryusei Kishida (1891-1929), influenced by the Renaissance movement in northern Europe, established Sodosha and was prominent in the field of Western painting in the Taisho period. He is well known for having painted many 'Reiko statues' modeled after his beloved daughter. The portrait of Reiko, depicting his beloved 8-year-old daughter, is one of Ryusei's representative works. The smile that lifts the corners of the mouth reminds me of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "Mona Lisa".
