Wang Shimin

  • Wang Shimin (1592-1680), courtesy name was Xun Zhi, art name was Yan Ke and Ouxie Daoren, later he changed to Xilu Laoren, born in Taicang Suzhou, a painter of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, the grandson of the scholar Wang Xijue, the son of the Hanlin editor Wang Heng, one of the Four Wangs. In the Ming Dynasty, he learned painting from Dong Qichang. His painting had a great influence on the Qing Dynasty, and he taught painting to Wang Hui, Wu Li and his grandson Wang Yuanqi. He founded the landscape painting “Gongdong School” and together with Wang Jian, Wang Hui and Wang Yuanqi were called the “Four Wangs”, and inclusive of Yun Shouping and Wu Li, they were called “Six Masters of the early Qing Dyansty”.
