Chen Zhaochang

Chen Zhaochang (1867-1914), courtesy names Tongchi (Chí, Chí) or Jiànchí (Jiǎnshǐ, Jiǎnzhì, Jiànchí), and pen name Pingshu, passed the provincial examination in the 15th year of the Guangxu reign (1889) and became a jinshi (top scholar) in the 20th year (1894). He was appointed as a probationary official in the Hanlin Academy and later became an editor of the academy. He also served in the Ministry of Justice and as a candidate for a regional official position. Chen Zhaochang traveled abroad with the Chinese ambassador to Britain. He was skilled in both calligraphy and poetry, and his works include *Twenty-Four Huafeng Hall Poems and Lyrics* and *Collected Works of Twenty-Four Huafeng Hall*.
