  • Lu Jingduan

    Lü Jingduan, styled Youling, also known by the pseudonyms Zhi Xun and Le Chan, was from Changzhou, Jiangsu. He became a jinshi (successful candidate in the imperial examination) in the eighth year of the Guangxu reign (1882). He held various positions, including serving as an official in the Cabinet Secretariat, and later worked at the Bureau of Sheng Xuanhuai, where he was in charge of the secretarial work for the longest period. Lü was skilled in running and regular script calligraphy, and his poetry and essays were known for their elegance. He was also well-versed in writing ci (a form of Chinese poetry) and was highly regarded in his time. Lü Jingduan self-styled himself as Zhi'an Jiquan Renxiong Yazheng (the honorable and elegant gentleman of Zhi'an and Jiquan), and his signature works reflected a refined character, such as "Zhi'an Lü Jingduan" and "Jinji Yan Ming Qu Yingyan" (the inkstone with a clear view of the phoenix-eye, and the golden incense pot with the fragrant quail spots).
