GEORGES VALMIER

• GEORGES VALMIER was a French painter whose practice developed from Cubism toward abstraction. His early works included landscapes and portraits influenced by Impressionism and Cézanne, while during the 1910s he explored a Cubist approach based on the geometric fragmentation of forms. After the First World War, he increasingly employed vivid areas of colour and overlapping forms, gradually moving away from recognizable subject matter. From around 1921, he developed an increasingly abstract language through the combination of circles, curves, and geometric forms, exploring the possibilities of composition through colour and form themselves. He was an early member of Abstraction-Création, founded in 1931, and also worked in theatre and ballet design, creating stage sets, costumes, and designs for textiles and other objects.
