MURAKAMI SABURO

• MURAKAMI SABURO, a Japanese painter and performance artist, was passionate about exploring new ways of artistic expression. In 1952, he co-founded the "Zero-kai Society" with Shozo Shimamoto and others. He joined the Gutai Art Association in 1955 and became one of the most renowned members of the association. That same year, his performance piece "Passage" caused a huge sensation. During the performance, Murakami energetically broke through layers of paper stretched across large frames, tearing through the screen-like barriers. Sometimes, he pierced through multiple layers of paper screens in succession, resembling a journey through tunnels, while other times he only pierced through a single layer. He remained committed to performance art and painting throughout his life until his passing.
