PAUL KLEE

• PAUL KLEE was a major figure in twentieth-century art, born in Switzerland. Drawing inspiration from music, nature and ancient art, he developed a distinctive visual language combining line, colour and symbolic forms to create works of remarkable poetic and imaginative character. His encounter with colour was deepened by his journey to Tunisia in 1914, while his teaching at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931 had a lasting influence on colour theory and modern art education. Notable works include Angelus Novus, The Golden Fish and Ad Parnassum. Major works are held in collections including the Zentrum Paul Klee, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
