GEORGES REDON

• GEORGES REDON was one of the leading French artists associated with Symbolism in the late nineteenth century. During the 1870s and 1880s, he developed his visionary Noirs, primarily in charcoal, exploring dreams, mystery and the unconscious, while also cultivating a distinctive language of fantasy through printmaking. From around 1890, he increasingly turned to colour, employing pastel and oil to depict flowers, figures and mythological subjects with vivid, poetic hues. His notable works include The Smiling Spider, The Cyclops and The Chariot of Apollo. Major works are held in collections including the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
