GEORGES BRAQUE

• GEORGES BRAQUE was a French painter who, following his early engagement with Fauvism, developed Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso, exerting a profound influence on the course of twentieth-century modern art. From around 1908, he pursued a radical reconfiguration of space and form, gradually establishing a distinctive visual language that integrated multiple viewpoints within a single pictorial plane. From 1912, Braque introduced the technique of papier collé, playing a significant role in the development of collage. He subsequently worked extensively with subjects including still lifes, interiors and landscapes, while his later practice expanded to recurring motifs of birds and the studio. His notable works include Violin (1911), Man with a Guitar (1911–12) and The Large Nude (1907–08). Major works are held in collections including the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.
