KARL-PIERRE DAUBIGNY

• KARL-PIERRE DAUBIGNY was born into the family of the Barbizon painter Charles-François Daubigny. While inheriting his father’s close observation of nature, he developed an independent approach to landscape painting. Drawing upon the landscapes of the Oise Valley, Normandy and Brittany, he was known for his fluid and expansive brushwork, through which he captured subtle variations of light and atmosphere. In the development of French landscape painting in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Daubigny occupies an important position in the transition from the naturalism of the Barbizon School towards Impressionism. His notable works include La Vallée de la Scie and Ferme Saint-Siméon, à Honfleur, while major works are held in collections including the Musée d’Orsay, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Daubigny Museum.
