Wan Qingli

• Wan Qingli, also known by the names Baihei and Haiyin, was a native of Xuancheng, Anhui Province. He was a Chinese painter and art historian and served as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong. In his early years, he studied painting under Professors Xiao Shufang and Wu Zuoren, and studied landscape painting under Li Keran and Lu Yanshao. He graduated from the Department of Art History of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1968 and completed the graduate program in Chinese Painting at the same academy in 1981. He became a member of the Chinese Artists Association in 1980 and worked at the Beijing Fine Art Academy and the China National Academy of Chinese Painting. In 1984, he went to the United States to pursue further studies, earning a master’s degree in Art History and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Kansas. From 1989 onward, he taught in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong.
