BETTY BIERNE PIERSON

• BETTY BIERNE PIERSON (née Betty Bierne Pierson) was an American painter, sculptor, and gallerist. After studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, she developed a lyrical abstract style inspired by nature and spirituality. Alongside her own artistic practice, she founded the Betty Parsons Gallery, where she championed leading Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Through both her art and her gallery, she played a pivotal role in the development of postwar American modern art.
