• RYURYUKYO SHINSAI was an ukiyo-e artist active during the late Edo period who is primarily known for illustrating popular fiction, including yomihon and gōkan. His illustrations are characterized by refined linework, balanced compositions, and a clear ability to convey narrative scenes and human expression. Although relatively little is known about his life, his surviving works reflect the important role of book illustration within the publishing culture of late Edo Japan.
