KATSUKAWA SHUNSHO

• KATSUKAWA SHUNSHO was the founder of the Katsukawa school and is celebrated for transforming the genre of actor prints. Rather than relying on conventionalized images, he portrayed kabuki actors with recognizable facial features and individual expressions, establishing a more realistic approach to yakusha-e. He also excelled in bijin-ga and paintings, while training many distinguished pupils, including the young Katsushika Hokusai. His innovations mark a major turning point in the history of ukiyo-e.
