Hu Xiaoshi

  • Hu Xiaoshi (personal name Guangwei) was a renowned scholar of ancient Chinese scripts, calligrapher, and painter. His courtesy name was Xiaoshi, and his sobriquets included Qianyin and Xialu; his studio was known as Yuanxialu. In his later years, he also used the alternative names Zixia and Shagong. He was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and his ancestral home was in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. Widely respected in both scholarship and the arts, Hu taught at Jinling University, National Central University, and Nanjing University. He made significant contributions to the study of ancient Chinese writing systems, calligraphy, and traditional painting.
