Qi Ziru, whose given name was Liangkun, was a native of Xiangtan, Hunan Province and the third son of the painter Qi Baishi. In his early years, he went to Beijing with his father to study painting and trained under Chen Banding. He specialized in meticulous paintings of insects and expressive flower paintings, and his artistic style combined the techniques of the Qi school with the elegant style of Chen Banding.
