Li Jie

Li Jie, courtesy name Cishan, has no biography in the History of Song, and is omitted from painting histories. A native of Heyang (present-day Meng County, Henan), he resided in Zhaxi, Huzhou, Zhejiang. He served as Registrar of Xiuning, Magistrate of Kunshan, Prefect of Piling, and Prefect of Qichun. In the first year of Shaoxi (1190) under Emperor Guangzong, he became Transport Commissioner of Sichuan as a Ministry official, and later requested retirement while holding a ceremonial post. He built a residence at Zhaxi and also styled himself “Yushe.” He associated with renowned literati such as Fan Chengda, Zhou Bida, Zhao Xiong, Hong Mai, and You Mao. He excelled in poetry and prose, and was also skilled in painting.
