HOSOE EIKO
-
HOSOE EIKO is one of the most influential photographers in Japan. Since the 1950s he has developed an avant-garde photographic practice, exploring the human body, butoh dance, and literature through dramatic compositions and strong contrasts of light and shadow. His collaboration with butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata in the photobook Kamaitachi is widely regarded as a landmark in the history of Japanese photography. Through dense tonal contrasts and highly theatrical imagery, Hosoe established a distinctive photographic world rich in psychological intensity and poetic imagination.
