QIAO SHIGUANG

  • QIAO SHIGUANG was a leading figure in modern Chinese lacquer art. Grounded in traditional techniques such as tuotai (bodiless lacquerware) and mother-of-pearl inlay, he produced works that synthesize decorative richness with rigorous compositional structure. His art is distinguished by geometric arrangements, restrained tonalities, and the interplay of lacquer’s natural sheen, creating surfaces that are both poetic and refined. Depicting themes such as water towns and ethnic customs, he achieved a convincing sense of spatial depth within fundamentally planar compositions. His works are held in major public collections in China, including the National Art Museum of China.
