Chushi Fanqi

  • Chushi Fanqi was a Chan Buddhist monk active during the late Yuan and early Ming periods in China. His secular surname was Zhu, his courtesy name was Tanyang, and he later adopted the sobriquet Chushi; he was also known as Xizhai Laoren. He was a native of Xiangshan, Zhejiang Province. He studied under Xugu Xiling at Jing Mountain, Yunwai Yunxiu at Tiantong Mountain, and Huiji Yuanxi at Jingci Temple, and later trained under Yuansou Xingduan at Jing Mountain, from whom he received dharma transmission. He was a sixth-generation dharma descendant of Dahui Zonggao of the Linji school. He was bestowed by the imperial court with the title “Chan Master Fori Puzhao Huibian.”
