Li Hongzhang

  • Li Daiwen was a jinshi degree holder and calligrapher of the Ming dynasty. His courtesy name was Cunwo, also written Cunwu. He was born in the 21st year of the Wanli reign (1603) in Zhugang Lijiajiao, Huating County, Songjiang Prefecture (present-day Dengta Village, Xidu Subdistrict, Fengxian District, Shanghai). In the 16th year of the Chongzhen reign (1643), he passed the metropolitan examination and was appointed Zhongshu Sheren. His calligraphy is noted for its powerful brushwork and elegant structure; his running script was considered comparable to that of Dong Qichang. A running-script poetry scroll in his hand is preserved in the Songjiang Museum, and he authored Yuyu Bengcun Manuscripts.
