Gao Shinian

  • Gao Shinian of the Qing dynasty, courtesy name Siyi, was a native of Houguan (present-day Fuzhou) and a literary figure known by the sobriquet Yunkezi. He excelled in calligraphy and was especially skilled in painting orchids and bamboo. Believing that calligraphy and painting share the same underlying principles, he painted with calligraphic methods and wrote with painterly techniques, achieving a subtle synthesis of the two arts. He was particularly protective of his bamboo paintings, which he kept private, and as a result, very few of his works have been passed down.
