GERRIT THOMAS RIETVELD
-
GERRIT THOMAS RIETVELD was a Dutch architect and designer. He apprenticed under his father, a furniture craftsman, and in 1911, he founded a company to produce cabinets of his own design. While running his company, he studied architecture and through this study, he became acquainted with the founders of "De Stijl". In 1917, he designed the Red and Blue Chair, which proposed fundamental changes in architectural theory. Berlage's buildings employed spaces that could freely transform, reflecting his pursuit of dynamic spatial concepts. The furniture he designed was later installed in these buildings. Additionally, his architectural masterpiece, the Schroder House, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently open to the public as a museum.
