HANS J WEGNER

  • HANS J WEGNER was born in 1914 in Southern Jutland, Denmark. He apprenticed in a furniture workshop during his childhood and obtained craftsman qualifications at the age of 17. Later, he studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. In 1940, after designing the Ordrup City Hall with Arne Jacobsen and others, he established his own studio focusing on chair production. His "Round Chair," introduced in 1949, was acclaimed by Interiors magazine as the most beautiful chair in the world. To date, he has designed over 500 wooden chairs, winning numerous awards. With his local craftsmanship and artisan talent, he has profoundly influenced the Nordic design world. Among his creations, the "Y Chair" stands out as the most widely produced. Starting his career as a furniture craftsman, Wegner's chairs, including the "Y Chair," masterfully showcase the beauty of wood that he uniquely expresses.
