KOJIMA ZENZABURO
-
KOJIMA ZENZABURO was a painter who brought a distinctive sensibility to Japanese Western-style art. During his time in France, he absorbed elements of Fauvism and classical oil painting, and upon returning to Japan he established a unique approach grounded in the idea of creating “oil painting by a Japanese hand.” His landscapes balance flat compositional structures with a sense of depth, employing rich and decorative color harmonies. His still lifes and flower compositions also demonstrate refined structural clarity and a calm, measured tone. By synthesizing influences from abroad with traditional Japanese aesthetics, he expanded the expressive range of oil painting in Japan.
