The Beauty of Urushi Lacquerware — Coloring the Tea Ceremony

Exhibition Hours: 10:00-16:30 (admission until 16:00);Closed Mondays (or, if Monday is a national holiday, closed Tuesday)

Admission Fee:800 yen for adults, 300 yen for students, free admission for junior high school students and younger

Introduce: Lacquer crafts are found in various parts of East and Southeast Asia, including Japan, China, Korea and Thailand. Many regional variations in objects and techniques exist.In this exhibition, we focus mainly on lacquerware styles that are used in tea ceremonies, such as Maki-e, Nashiji, and Kamakura-bori. We also exhibit some distinctive Chinese carved lacquer trays and Kinma vessels from Thailand. In addition, other lacquer works that are on display include incense chests and decorations for traditional drawing rooms.
